Following an experience of the lighting design process at Astro, a group of product design students have risen to the challenge to create some commercially-relevant lighting designs.

"I was impressed by the maturity displayed in the designs," said design director James Bassant, who set the task for the sixth formers from Knights Templar School in Baldock, Hertfordshire. "Real thought of the products' commercial relevance has gone into the process."

During their visit to Astro earlier this year the group was led by James through the process of bringing a luminaire to market, from the design department, through the prototyping office and photographic studio and finally to the warehouse to see the finished, packaged product. James explained how work behind the scenes transforms a sketched concept into a market-ready product for despatch to the customer, giving insights into the product life cycle along the way.

The students had clearly taken on board what they saw. "Thanks to very well-made models you didn't have to use imagination or ignore faults to appreciate the concept. Simple minimal designs can be the hardest to get right and look effortless and this was done very well," said James.

Astro looks forward to working with another group from the school next year, when the students will have the chance to experience Astro's significantly bigger design department at the new purpose-built headquarters in Harlow.
