From sketch to market - sixth formers see how it’s done at Astro
Sixth formers studying product design at the Knights Templar School in Baldock, Hertfordshire, have had a taste of the lighting design process thanks to a visit to Astro.
Design director James Bassant led the group through the process of bringing a luminaire to market, from the design department, through the prototyping office and photographic studio and finally to the warehouse to see the finished, packaged product. James explained how work behind the scenes transforms a sketched concept into a market-ready product for despatch to the customer, giving insights into the product life cycle along the way.
Astro's busy design department includes a number of young graduates who have brought fresh perspectives while gaining commercial experience in a stimulating, dynamic environment. "We are very keen to nurture talent at Astro and were delighted to welcome the students from Knights Templar. We have set them the task of developing a light which would fit Astro's portfolio. They are due to present their ideas to us when we visit the school in the next few weeks. I'm eager and intrigued to see what they come up with."
